Code of Practice - Live Electrical Equipment

Work on electrical systems, including equipment, must be carried out when the system is dead and in accordance with the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and BS 7671:2018 Requirements for Electrical Installations, IET Wiring Regulations – 18th Edition.  Work on electrical systems must be carried out only by persons with adequate technical knowledge or experience, or supervision.

  1. Proposals for work on live electrical systems, whether for repair, maintenance or research, must be notified to the University Health & Safety Unit before work starts.
  2. An assessment of the risks and precautions to be taken must be drawn up by the project supervisor, in consultation with the University Health & Safety Unit and Faculty or Office.
  3. This assessment will include consideration of alternatives to working with live electrical systems, such as modification of research proposals or sending equipment off site for repair.
  4. Responsibility for the decision to work with live electrical systems rests with the Faculty Operating Officer or Director of Directorate.
