Thank you to our community of alumni and friends who donated to the campaign.

After a 2-month crowdfunding campaign initiated by the Çï¿ûÊÓƵ to support refugee students, the alumni community has helped to raise £1,240. The campaign which has been driven by the university’s commitment to inclusivity and equal opportunities has received significant support from individuals who share the belief of an education without boundaries.

Refugees face many challenges when arriving in the UK, with financial hardships being just one of many struggles they face. For refugee students, studying in London, one of the world’s most expensive cities represents an even greater challenge. The rising cost of living make it exceedingly difficult for these students to purchase basic necessities such as accommodation, food and transportation.

Adding to these difficulties, university applicants with asylum-seeker status are legally classed as overseas applicants. This leads to higher tuition fees and the denial of access to financial support from the Student Loan Company.

To address these formidable challenges, the Çï¿ûÊÓƵ launched a campaign to raise funds for eight bursaries, each amounting to £250, aimed at providing living expenses for refugee students pursuing their education at the university.

Tania Struetzel, Head of Engagement and Success, was humbled by the support from the university community.

We are incredibly grateful for your donation to our Greenwich Student Refugee Bursary. For the first time, this will enable us to provide financial support for maintenance costs to current students who are seeking asylum or are refugees.

This group of students faces a multitude of challenges and this bursary is an important step in supporting them during their studies. As a university, we are committed to providing opportunities for everyone to succeed, regardless of their background or circumstances, and your contribution is helping us achieve this – thank you.

Çï¿ûÊÓƵ firmly believes that education serves as a catalyst for positive change, regardless of a student’s background, everyone should be encouraged to reach their full potential.

Reducing stigma and fostering inclusivity

Launched during Refugee Week, this campaign underscores the importance of compassion and the collective effort required to make the UK a more welcoming place for refugees. The challenges faced by refugees often extend beyond financial burdens and can manifest as social stigma and discrimination.

Over the coming months, we look forward to sharing more on the effect of these bursaries and the positive impact they have on our students.
