Web browser information for managed workstations

TLDRoffon

Microsoft Edge is the default browser on all managed workstations. We have opted for Edge due to its security, performance, compatibility, and integration with Windows and Microsoft services.

The use of Edge on a university device ensures that you can access and manipulate your work data within any Microsoft app in a secure fashion.

It adheres to the university’s data security and compliance policies and delivers a stable end user experience across the university’s corporate applications portfolio.

If you are using a managed device then your browser will be updated automatically to the latest version available.

Other browsers including Chrome are not available on university managed devices. Chrome is being discontinued on university desktop machines.

Please contact the IT Service Desk:

  • If you have any specific questions or problems using our applications on your desktop, laptop or mobile device
  • If you require advice for legacy incompatible websites

If an issue cannot be resolved using the recommended browser, then please log an AMP request giving the reasons another browser is required. Each request will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Tracking and privacy:

We have a binding agreement with Microsoft that any data collected in Edge will be kept secure and stored with our knowledge.

Extensions security:

Sometimes extensions can modify what users see on a web page or even touch files on a user's computer. Extensions could endanger the stability of the browser as well as the security of users. Edge allows us to control which extensions are loaded after they have been vetted for security and applicability.
