Aims

The aims of this course are: To enable the student to consider personal employability and career issues; To develop skills in business communication; To develop critical awareness and the need for critical thinking; To explore the role of the IT professional within the development environment.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course a student will be able to:

1 Apply employability skills to vocational situations;
2 Demonstrate appropriate business communication skills;
3 Apply critical thinking skills to a workplace situation;
4 Demonstrate an understanding of the role of the IT professional

Indicative content

Recognising employability skills, understanding IT careers, preparing for job hunting, developing a career plan. Developing entrepreneurship, business plan acumen, Reflective writing and critical thinking, Understanding business communications, communicating effectively in writing. The role of the IT professional, professional bodies, ethical & legal considerations.

Teaching and learning activity

Two hours of lecture (67%)
One hour of tutorial per week. (33%)

Assessment

Coursework (Group Report) - 100% weighting, 40% pass mark.
