Aims

The aim of this course is to equip students with a critical understanding of the various dimensions of sustainability and its contested interpretations in tourism, hospitality and events. The course provides a theoretical and practical understanding of sustainability and its prospects for successful implementation in a variety of destination typologies and tourism formats. Ecotourism as an exemplar of sustainable tourism is also examined.

2 Describe the environmental, social and economic impacts of tourism development and visitor pressures on destinations from a sustainability perspective.
3 Outline the new types of tourism linked to sustainable tourism, including sustainable event tourism.

鈥 Exploring the relationship between tourism, the environment and sustainability
鈥 Can sustainable tourism be an alternative to mass tourism?
鈥 Operationalising sustainable tourism through governments and other key stakeholders
鈥 Sustainable tourism in southern European countries
鈥 Challenges presented by tourism to the sustainability of destinations and tourism itself
鈥 Sustainable tourism management techniques (e.g. eco labelling, accreditation)
鈥 Sustainability-led innovation and entrepreneurship in the tourism industry
鈥 The contributions of NGOs and social movements to sustainable tourism
鈥 Influencing people鈥檚 behaviour through sustainability thinking in tourism, hospitality and events

Assessment

Essay - 100% weighting, 40% pass mark.
Students will write an essay on a contemporary issue relating to the management of sustainability in tourism. The essay will be based on academic literature and will explore models and theories, and relate these to relevant case studies. 2500 words.
