Aims

This course aims to develop a critical awareness of the sustainable management of mass tourism. Students will be supported to develop the ability to critique key areas of mass tourism and to identify areas where sustainability initiatives can be implemented, or where sustainable management techniques can be adopted. The historical development and impacts of mass tourism will be explored as well as its future role within the international tourism industry.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:

1 Çï¿ûÊÓƵ the contemporary mass tourism sector through an assessment of its history, context and current significance in the tourism industry
2 Investigate and assess the key mass tourism products and consumers and their interrelationships
3 Evaluate the impacts of mass tourism in different contexts and generate ideas for its sustainable management.

Indicative content

This course will include subject matter within the following thematic areas;
• The historical development and current contexts of mass Tourism
• Mass tourism business models and products
• Mass Tourism and sustainable development
• Profiles of mass tourists
• Managing the impacts of mass tourism
• Contemporary and future planning and policy agendas.

Teaching and learning activity

Lectures, workshops, tutorials, and field visits.

Assessment

Report: 100% weighting, 40% pass mark.

Outline Details: A report evaluating sustainable development aspects of the mass tourism industry. 3000 words.

Formative Assessment: Formative assessments include a series of tutorial tasks related to digital tourism management such as web site design, search engine optimisation, digital strategy and social media and web analytics that will support students in achieving the module learning outcomes.
