Completion of the IM level 4 module.

Aims

This module is designed to enhance the students’ knowledge in a specific area of chemistry outside the indicative content of the taught programme. It aims to develop an appreciation of a specific topic in chemistry through the study of appropriate literature and to enhance the student’s skills through the presentation of an `evaluation both orally and in a written report.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:
1. Demonstrate the ability to appreciate scientific information, its development and progress to
date in a wider context
2. Carry out an analysis of appropriate scientific literature
3. Demonstrate a good standard of professional competence in the presentation of a well written case study report.
4. Give a concise and clear oral account of the topic studied

Indicative content

Investigative methodology is largely student centred, using a bank of topics developed from scheduled practical work or mini-projects. Students are given a set of broad objectives and will be expected to devise and carry out an investigation. The students will compile a written report and present their findings.

Teaching and learning activity

The module content will be delivered online, using ‘Moodle’ software. Çï¿ûÊÓƵ will be introduced and discussed by a series of online PowerPoint presentations or journal articles. In addition, students will also be directed to relevant related material online and in the literature.
Student-centred activities will be primarily, personal research through appropriate academic and technical literature, online resources and local workplace documentation. Evaluation of learning outcomes will be through the submission of an essay and presentation of findings as either a Skype presentation or in a pre-recorded format.

Assessment

Essay: 60% weighting, 40% pass mark.
Learning Outcomes: 1 - 3.
Word Length: 2000 words.

Presentation: 40% weighting, 40% pass mark.

Duration: 15 minutes.
Outline Details: An oral presentation in person or via skype/video.
