Academic Portfolio Lead: Public Health since February 2023.

Muhammad Osman trained as a clinician in South Africa and rendered clinical services in primary health care with a focus on Tuberculosis and HIV medicine for 9 years. Muhammad transitioned to Health Management and took responsibility for Primary Health Care and Environmental Health services for a designated area in the metropolitan City of Cape Town, South Africa for 3 years. He completed his Post Graduate Diploma in Health Management at the University of Cape Town, MSc in Epidemiology at Columbia University in New York as a Fogarty Fellow and PhD at Stellenbosch University as a recipient of the Bongani Mayosi National Health Scholars Programme scholarship.

Muhammad has substantive experience teaching quantitative methods, epidemiology, and health management. Muhammad currently oversees the Master’s research projects and dissertations, coordinating the supervision of students in both Global Public Health and Global Health management.

Responsibilities within the university

As an Academic Portfolio Lead: Public Health, Muhammad is responsible for the day-to-day management of staff in the Public Health portfolio, focusing on building team identity, delivering appraisal outcomes and objective-setting, and developing and mentoring established and early career staff. As a member of the School Management team, he sets standards of excellence in teaching, learning and research across the portfolio.
