Emily Critchley

Dr Emily Critchley BA (Oxon), MA, PhD (Cantab)

Senior Lecturer in English and Creative Writing

Dr Critchley has an international reputation as a specialist in contemporary experimental writing. She holds degrees from Oxford, Bristol and Cambridge universities. Dr Critchley taught at, and received her doctorate in contemporary experimental American writing and philosophy from the University of Cambridge. She has also held visiting lectureships at the University of East London and Oxford University. She is the author of thirteen poetry collections (with Crater, Shearsman, Boiler House, Barque, Intercapillary, Corrupt, Holdfire, Torque, Oystercatcher, Dusie, Bad and Arehouse presses) and a selected writing: Love / All That / & OK (Penned in the Margins, 2011). Dr Critchley has published critical articles on poetry, philosophy and feminism and is the editor of Out of Everywhere 2: Linguistically Innovative Poetry by Women in North America & the UK (Reality Street, 2016) and co-editor of #MeToo: A Poetry Collective (Chicago Review, Summer, 2018). In 2003 she won The Other Prize (Cambridge) for best original play, in 2005 she won the John Kinsella-Tracy Ryan prize for Poetry, in 2011 won the national Jane Martin Prize for Poetry and in 2018 she was Highly Commended by the Forward Prize. Her work has been reviewed internationally and translated into several languages.

Highly Commended for her entry into the 

Emily co-edited and introduced an Open Access edition of Chicago Review:  (Summer, 2018) that brought together some 63 poets from across the world.

Nominator for the Windham-Campbell prize for poetry at Yale University, external examiner for Creative Writing at the University of Southampton, guest teacher for the Poetry School and a peer reviewer for the Journal of British and Irish Innovative Poetry.
