Giulia joined the Çï¿ûÊÓƵ in July 2016. She received her PhD in Social Policy from the University of Kent, having previously studied history, politics and socio-legal studies at UWE and Bristol University.

While at Greenwich, Giulia developed a passion for delivering higher education in prison. She is a trained facilitator of the , and built an education partnership with HMP Downview.

Before coming to academia, she worked in harm reduction services and drug policy advocacy.

Research / Scholarly interests

Giulia’s research interests centre around the relationship between evidence and policy, particularly in the context of drug policy, and the role of morality and hierarchies of knowledge in policymaking. She is also interested in feminist debates within sex work/prostitution policy, debates on decriminalisation, and prison education.

Current Project and Impact:

Giulia’s current ongoing project, ‘People and Dancefloors: narratives of drug-taking’, involves team-based participatory action research through film. The project explores the boundaries between research and activism. More information about the project is available here:

  • Franca Roeschert is researching the role of City of Sanctuary in supporting participation of refugees and migrants in urban governance
