Research / Scholarly interests
Lab’s most recent research project is a Virtual Production film in which he plans to synthesize the world of theatre with that of Virtual Production. The project involves the setting - and filming - of a stage-based project within a Virtual Production studio, thereby creating a new genre of film which intersects - and enters into a dialogue - with the disciplines of theatre and Virtual Production.
Key funded projects
Lab has shot and developed many films, collaborating with - and funded by - FILM LONDON, BBC WRITERSROOM, B3 MEDIA for the UK FILM COUNCIL, the BFI, and SKY ARTS, to name a few.
Selected, recent research projects:
“AUTOMAT”, SKY ARTS
- Lab was chosen by SKY ARTS as one of 50 British artists for their ART 50 initiative which examined our national identity following the Brexit referendum. His commissioned film “AUTOMAT” looked at the culture of exploiting migrant labour in the world of online shopping and distribution. This film was broadcast on Sky and is available to stream online.
“BRITISH PEOPLE”, UNCERTAIN KINGDOM
- Lab was one of 20 filmmaking teams invited to tackle and interrogate what it means to be living in the UK today. Lab directed the film “BRITISH PEOPLE” which dealt with the British-Chinese diaspora in England and specifically with its representation in the political sphere. This film toured the UK as part of an anthology of films representing an ‘Uncertain Kingdom’.
