Aims

The aim of this module is to provide students with an understanding of the entrepreneurial mindset. Students will learn how effective entrepreneurs, within the events sector, are able to use the principles of ideation and apply their imagination and creativity to identify and evaluate commercial opportunities. By the end of this module, students will be able to apply this understanding and develop a feasible events business idea from scratch.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:

Demonstrate an understanding of the entrepreneurial mindset in the context of the events sector.

Apply theories of applied imagination, ideation, and creative thinking to real life problems in the events sector.

Identify and evaluate opportunities and develop commercially viable solutions for the events sector.

Communicate a viable business idea to stakeholders and investors.

Indicative content

• Introduction to entrepreneurial theory, Effectuation, and the Entrepreneurial Mindset
• Applied imagination, creative thinking, Ideation and asking better questions.
• Identifying opportunities, Problem identification, Problem solving and Iteration
• Market analysis, Value creation and co-creation, Understanding customers.
• Innovation and differentiation – making use of 7Ps to identify and demonstrate innovation.
• Feasibility and Financial forecasting
• Effective Website design, Pitching and communicating your idea – impactful presentations, Storytelling.
• Freelancing and self-employment within entrepreneurship

Teaching and learning activity

Seminar:
2 Hour workshops will be used for students to apply their understanding and develop their business ideas, pitch, and website.
Lecture:
Using a flipped classroom. Lecture material and related resources will be pre-recorded, that students are able to access before they begin each workshop.
Self-directed learning:
Students are expected to engage with the lecture material prepared weekly to come into the flipped classroom with foundational knowledge they will develop and embed with the interactive class activities. Students will also be expected to complete weekly reading which supports the learning set by the tutor before coming to the workshop.
Case studies:
Teaching and learning activities will cover a range of case studies that will introduce students to ideation ad creativity examples along with case studies of previous students on the course.

Assessment

Presentation - 20%
LO1; LO4.
Pass mark - 40%
Group Pitch: students will prepare a 15-minute pitch which outlines the commercial feasibility of a live event concept.

Coursework - 80%
LO1; LO2, LO3, LO4.
Pass mark - 40%
Group Website: Students will develop a website that promotes their live event concept.

Nature of FORMATIVE task(s) supporting student learning:
A drop-in assessment clinic will be organised to allow student to ask questions about their summative assignment.
