Aims

The aim of this module is to provide students with an Introduction to Financial Management, addressing aspects of Business Finance and Accounting that enable an understanding of how firms finance their productive activities in the wider economy, both in the short and long term. The Learning Outcomes addressed are considered key to managerial jobs in the global economy.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:
1 Understand how financial and management accounting are applied in the management of the economic activity of the firm.
2 Gain awareness of how financial statements are compiled, reported and analysed
3 Recognise the role of external finance in the financing of the firm
4 Develop an understanding how internal and external financing interact in the financing of the firm

Teaching and learning activity

In the light of important recent demographic changes in our student population, a flipped classroom approach will be applied. Classroom activities would involve group work based on materials on Moodle which students are expected to have prepared before class. The delivery of this module will consist of a 2 hour workshop per week over a 12 weeks period. Both online and offline activities will be linked to the financial evaluation project.

Assessment

Financial evaluation of a Business Project (50% LOs: 1-4; 2,000 words). Pass mark- 40%. Outline details: Students will simulate the financial evaluation of a Business Project;
Online test (50% LOs: 1-4; ).
Formative assessment: Online activities to track individual engagement.
