Aims

The course provides an opportunity to identify and reflect upon strategies to empower children, through critically evaluating research, legislation, and policy which foregrounds the rights of the child. It can also provide an opportunity to understand the theoretical perspectives as to how children can participate in their world and to reflect upon this in order to implement strategies for practice.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this module students will have identified and understood:

1. Strategies in order to work as an effective advocate for children.
2. The legislative framework which empowers children and promotes equality
3. The roles of statutory and voluntary agencies in empowering children and the promotion of equality.
4. Contemporary and significant research and literature to empower children and reflect upon implications for practice.
5. How to implement strategies to promote and sustain an enabling environment for children.
6. How to implement strategies to develop effective communication skills of individuals.
7. How to implement strategies to form meaningful and effective relationships with young children to maximise their potential.

Indicative content

• Children’s rights national and international perspectives.
• The legislative framework re equality and children’s rights.
• The role of statutory agencies in the promotion of children’s rights.
• The role of voluntary agencies in the promotion of children’s rights.
• Significant and emerging research on the enhancement of children’s rights and implications for early years practice. Including Convention on the rights of the child (UNCR, 1989).
• Strategies and resources to promote enhance and sustain an enabling environment for all children.
• Theoretical perspectives on the development of communication skills.
• Strategies to develop communication skills of the individual child.
• Strategies to develop meaningful/positive relationships between the child and the childcare professional to enhance learning and development.


Teaching and learning activity

Taught sessions, workshops, small group activities, and academic support.

Assessment

In Class Timed Assignment: 80% weighting, 40% pass mark.
Learning Outcomes: 1 - 7.
Outline Details: The one-hour timed assessment will take the form of an essay in which the student will demonstrate their understanding as to how to provide and enhance an enabling environment for children.

Leaflet: 20% weighting, 40% pass mark.
Learning Outcomes: 1 - 7.
Outline Details: Prepare a leaflet aimed at practitioners, that explains how to implement the Mosaic approach in a setting. 1,000 words.
