Aims

To provide students with a detailed knowledge of how Parliament works in both theory and practice. Çï¿ûÊÓƵ the work, processes and business of the UK system of government.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:
1. Have an academic and theoretical understanding of the work, processes and business of the UK Houses of Parliament.
2. Understand the key institutions of UK government and the relationships between them.
3. Çï¿ûÊÓƵ key influences shaping the UK Parliament such as party discipline, the role of committees and parliamentary debates.
4. Examine the actions and decisions of major parliamentary personalities.
5. Develop skills in the critical reading of primary and secondary parliamentary sources.

Indicative content

The module focusses on how the Houses of Parliament operates and could cover such themes as: the structure of Parliament; the legislative process; the role of Select Committees; the role and work of MPs; Parliament and scrutiny; Parliament and devolution; Parliament and Europe; the role and work of Members of the House of Lords; the relationship with the executive; Parliament and the public; and how the UK Parliament interacts with other Parliaments and legislatures.

Seminars and small group activity workshops.
Visit to Parliament.
One-to-one tutorials.

Assessment

Practical: 100% weighting, 40% pass mark.
Learning Outcomes: 1 - 6.
Word Length: 3000 words.
Outline Details: Students replicate a parliamentary event such as debate or select committee evidence session.

Formative Assessment: Tutorial meetings to discuss progress and direction of work done towards completion of practical exercise.
