Pre and co requisites

Students cannot take the Humanities and Social Sciences Level 6 Work Placement if they have already completed the Humanities and Social Sciences Level 5 Work Placement.

Aims

This is a level 6, 30-credit module offered as an option to students in Creative Writing, English, History, Languages and International Relations, Sociology, and other specified single and combined honours programmes. The employability of students and graduates continues to be a central focus in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Çï¿ûÊÓƵ, and this module:
• Provides opportunities for students to experience the workplace relevant to their area of study;
• Supports them to further develop the skills that employers require in order to enhance students' prospects for employment and/or further study after graduation;
• Develop advanced understanding of the world of work and to provide opportunities to demonstrate relevant skills in work relevant to the field of study;
• Çï¿ûÊÓƵ the relationship between academic study and everyday work activities at an advanced level;
• Contextualise the practical experience of work by enabling students to reflect on the relationship between their studies and the workplace.
• Improve and apply advanced analytic, reflective, written, and oral communication skills.
Students who successfully complete this module will have demonstrated level 6 undergraduate-level- ability in the generic skills and placement specific skills of their relevant QAA subject benchmark statement.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:
1 Gain practical and developmental work experience in a subject related discipline
2 Develop their abilities to monitor, review, reflect upon, and evaluate their experiences relative to specific targets and goals at an advanced level
3 Understand and critically analyse the role of their subject discipline within the wider industry relevant to their placement
4 Establish and apply an advanced-level knowledge of how academic and theoretical perspectives from their programme of study are applied in a professional setting and develop a mature intellectual understanding of these fields
5 Demonstrate an advanced ability to apply relevant transferable skills between the classroom and the workplace
6 Produce advanced-level standard of critically reflective writing and a research project that link professional practice and experience to academic examination and appraisal

Indicative content

Students on the Humanities and Social Sciences Level 6 Work Placement will undertake a work placement relevant to their subject discipline. The nature of the placement will therefore vary by subject, but placements have included: working in archives (local and national), museums, publishing houses, schools (primary and secondary), youth work settings, local government departments, magazines, charities, and the heritage sector. Taught sessions will include subject specific skills content, as well as advanced-level skills sessions on topics such as reflective writing and communication.

Teaching and learning activity

The Humanities and Social Sciences Level 6 Work Placement consists of 150 hours of internally and externally supervised work placements in a workplace found by the student and approved by the internal supervisor. Placement hours can begin to be accrued in the summer preceding the start of term in September with the agreement of the internal supervisor. Teaching consists of internal supervision and workshop sessions. The role of the internal supervisor is to provide guidance and support throughout the placement process through regular supervisions, and to supervise the independent assessments. Regular workshops will be divided into discipline specific sessions, skills sessions, and drop-in sessions.

Assessment

Reflective portfolio - 30%
LO - 1,2,3,4,5,6.
Pass mark - 40%
2,000 words.
A portfolio of writing and/or other outputs critically reflecting on the experience of the work placement, to include a report sent by the external employer and a confirmation of the number of hours of placement undertaken.

Project - 70%
LO - 1,2,4,5,6.
Pass mark - 40%
4,000 words.
A project to be agreed between the student and the internal supervisor relevant to the placement undertaken.

Nature of FORMATIVE assessment supporting student learning:
Presentation: A short presentation on a subject to be specified by the module convenors (outcomes assessed 2,4,5).
