Introducing Computing for Emerging Technologies at the Çï¿ûÊÓƵ

TLDRoffon

A new undergraduate degree programme focusing on the use and management of new technologies will be available to study on the Medway Campus from September 2024.

Learn to adapt to changing technological trends

A new course at the Çï¿ûÊÓƵ, BSc Computing for Emerging Technologies, has been designed to meet the growing need among workplaces for employees with specialisms in emerging technologies, especially artificial intelligence. Students will look at computing and engineering topics through a business lens, learning to build and manage complex computer systems that will support businesses to carry out day-to-day operations and key functions such as data analysis. Students will develop in-depth understanding of current new technologies and hone the flexible skills that will be needed as these technologies evolve.

The course can be studied over three years full-time, six years part-time, and can be studied in sandwich mode, meaning a paid placement in a relevant role in the sector can be undertaken, a great way to gain valuable work experience.

Desirable skills for many roles

Graduates of the course will be proficient in programming languages including Python and will have grasped areas of computing and engineering that will be essential for many roles through studying modules such as Applications in AI and Data Science, Fundamentals of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering, and Information Analysis and Visualisation. Modules such as Project Management and Leadership, and the final year project element of the course, will help students develop desirable soft skills as they prepare for the working world.

Graduates may go on to work as programmers, business analysts, computer engineers, software engineers, data scientists and more, or may take forwards their expertise in artificial intelligence, for example to work as machine learning engineers, robotics engineers, or cybersecurity specialists.

In addition, the Çï¿ûÊÓƵ offers a Master’s degree in Applied Artificial Intelligence for Engineering, as well as a number of postgraduate degrees in computing and computer science subjects that graduates of the course may wish to progress to.

A well-established portfolio of engineering and technology courses

The course, which will be taught at the Medway Campus, is among a number of new courses being offered on the Medway Campus for September 2024, which includes the conversion Master’s course MSc Data Science and its Applications. BSc Computing for Emerging Technologies complements the wide-ranging portfolio of engineering and technology courses at the University, which includes Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence) and Computer Science (Cyber Security) on the Greenwich Campus, and the courses Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Cybernetics, taught at the Medway Campus. The Medway Campus and Greenwich Campus, connected by an inter-campus bus service, boasts excellent computer for students to use to complete their assignments and projects.

The bus service also supports students to take full advantage of the opportunities in front of them, for example to join societies such as CompTech Society and Engineering Society, attend networking events and lectures from exciting guest speakers on campus such as Professor Nira Chamberlain and Bobby Seagull, and showcase projects or portfolios to potential employers at events such as Digital Shark Expo.
