Wolfson Centre

Measurement of the Properties and Bulk Behaviour of Particulate Materials

Course Dates

20 and 21 January 2025

The course will run online over 2 sessions; each session will start at 14:00 until 17:00 hrs UK time; both sessions need to be attended to complete the course.

There will be an opportunity to discuss operational issues with the presenters and other delegates.

Course Fee

£500  full fee per delegate. Discounted rate £437.50 per delegate.

Discounts are available for group bookings and returning delegates.

Registration

Registration and payment is available via the

Online registration closes on 16 January 2025.

The online course will be held via MS Teams.  A link to join will be sent  during the week before the course starts.

Course overview

This course is designed to give delegates an overview of various methods for determining the bulk behaviour of powder and granular particulates.

The range of measurement techniques covered by the presenters will:

  • Introduce relevance to real-world industrial scenarios
  • Describe how the particular technique works and where it would be most useful.

You will learn about a chosen selection of the following topics:

  • Particle size measurement techniques
  • Particle Density (solid and bulk)
  • Flow property measurements
  • Moisture uptake
  • Propensity for Segregation/de-blending
  • Degradation/friability of bulk through handling systems
  • Caking/agglomeration of bulk materials in storage
  • Explosability
  • Pneumatic conveying properties
  • Dustiness testing
  • Mechanical Surface Energy Testing -  (Dr Garg recently won the prestigious MHEA Innovation Award at BULKEX 2024 for his work in the development of the MSET)

Is this for me?

Plant operators and designers, plant managers and maintenance personnel will all benefit enormously from attending this course, through improving their understanding of the behaviour of powders to learning techniques to overcome the problems encountered.
The course will be of great interest to personnel that are new to materials handling, or require an update on the subject.

Course team

The course leader is Dr Vivek Garg, whose interests lie in powder flowability;

Contributions may also be made from the rest of the Team, including
Mike Bradley, Professor of Bulk and Particulate Technologies and Director of The Wolfson Centre. He has worked internationally on design and troubleshooting of bulk solids handling as a commercial consultant and research expert for over twenty years;
Dr Baldeep Kaur, whose interests lie in characterisation and transportation of bulk materials;
Dr Atul Sharma, whose interests lie in pneumatic conveying systems.
Dr Hamed Johnny Sarnavi, whose interest lie in classification and drying techniques.

Please note that The Wolfson Centre reserves the right to substitute leaders of equal quality should this be dictated by circumstances beyond their control.

In-Company course

A version of this course can be delivered as an in-Company course on line at a time to suit operational requirements.

These courses are proving to be a popular option for companies who have a number of personnel who would benefit from education in the subject area, for 3 main reasons:

  1. Cost: It is more economic for us to bring the course to you, than for you to send several staff out to us;
  2. Relevance: We can tailor the course programme to suit the operations you have in your plant, hence reducing the amount of material which is not directly relevant;
  3. Convenience: We can run the course when it suits you, even over several separate days rather than in a block if it is better for you.

If you are interested in discussing your requirements, please contact us.
