Funding for PGR study

There are a number of types of funding available for postgraduate research (PGR) studies:

Doctoral Loans

The UK government offers a that can help with course fees and living costs while you study a postgraduate doctoral course, such as a PhD.

Whether you qualify depends on:

  • your course
  • your age
  • your nationality or residency status

We have compiled a database of funders of PhD programmes conducted in the UK open to potential candidates worldwide as well as links to some charities and organisations that provide direct funding of doctoral studies.

Other Scholarships and PhD Programmes

About 116 Masters courses and 8 Joint Doctorate courses are supported by the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degrees (EMJMDs) and the Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorates (EMJD) scholarships.
Value: Fully funded
Level/Field of Study: Master and doctorate levels in the fields of agriculture and veterinary engineering, manufacturing, and construction, health and welfare, humanities and art, science, mathematics and computer science, social sciences, business, and law.
Eligible Nationalities: There are no restrictions on the nationalities of students who are eligible for this scholarship.
Application Deadline: The deadline varies between October and January.

Marshall scholarships are awarded to American students who wish to take a graduate course in British universities. Imperial Marshall scholarships are awarded to academics with high academic credentials and leadership excellence throughout the United States.

Application Deadline: Sep/Oct

Newton Funds provides funding for British students to study in the United Kingdom in order to complete their doctoral studies or for doctoral students to spend a period of one year in study in the UK. The aim is to facilitate capacity development and the creation of lasting links between the United Kingdom and foreign institutions.

Level: PhD
Eligible Nationalities: Students from Africa, Asia (including China, India & South East Asia), Europe, Middle East, North America, Oceania, South & Central America are eligible to apply.
