Menus and Navigation

Teams has been designed to look the same in a browser, PC or Mac, while the mobile apps provide almost full functionality too.

Navigating around Teams

Teams has a simple key feature based navigation system across all versions of the programme (desktop, browser and mobile app).

Where is the Navigation bar?

  • The Teams navigation bar will be along the left side of your screen
  • Each icon on the navigation bar is for a different feature of Teams
  • The image across shows what the navigation bar should look like on the left of your screen
  • Teams can be navigated easily by selecting the icon that you want to use (the functions of these icons are explained below)

What do the icons on the navigation bar do?

 
Activity

Clicking the Activity icon (labelled with a bell) will take you to your Activity page.

On this page you will find:

  • your activity feed on the left (which will show you all your current and past notifications depending on your notification settings)
  • your last visited Team on the right.
 
Chat

Clicking the Chat icon (labelled with a speech bubble) will take you to the private Chat page.

Here you can:

  • create new chats with colleagues by clicking the paper and pen icon at the top of the screen
  • continue previous chats
  • chat with individuals or groups
  • audio/video call individuals or groups
 
Teams

Clicking the Teams icon (labelled with 3 people) will take you to your Teams page.

Here you can:

  • access the Teams you are a member of
  • join and create new Teams
  • see notifications in your Teams
 
Assignments

Clicking the Assignments icon (labelled with a school bag) allows you to:

  • create a class (if you are academic staff)
  • to post in the class (if you are a student)
 
Calendar

Clicking the Calendar icon (labelled with a calendar) is synced with your Outlook calendar.

  • Any appointments/meetings/events that you have added to your Outlook calendar will appear here.

Other navigation icons (Desktop/Browser)

 
Calls

The Calls icon allows you to make audio or video calls to your colleagues. Press make a call, type your colleagues name in the search box, then select if you want to make an audio or video call.

 
Files

Clicking the Files icon (labelled with a piece of paper) allows you to access:

  • recently opened files
  • files saved to your OneDrive
  • files that have been added to your Teams by other Team members.
 
Profile icon

Clicking on your profile picture in the top right corner of your screen allows you to:

  • change your profile picture
  • change your availability indicator
  • set a status message
  • access your settings (where you can change how Teams looks for you)
  • access links to download the desktop and mobile apps
  • sign out of Teams

 
Apps

The apps icon in the bottom left of your screen (labelled with 4 squares) takes you to apps that can be added to your Teams

 
Help

The help icon in the bottom left of your screen (labelled with a question mark) will open a drop down menu where you can select what you want to view:

  • Topics - if you want help from Microsoft
  • Training - if you want to learn how to use Teams better
  • What's new - if you want to see new features in Teams
  • Suggest a feature - you can suggest to Microsoft something you think should be added and see what suggestions Microsoft are currently working on
  • Report a Problem - if there is an issue that you think is a bug you can send this information to Microsoft
  • Ask the community - ask other Teams users

3 Lines Icon

On the upper left of your screen there is an icon with 3 lines (as shown in the image across)

Clicking this icon brings up further options and allows you to:

  • change your availability status
  • set an out of office message
  • change the notification settings of the app
  • access your settings (where you can find Teams help and sign out of your account)
